CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR
10 POSTGRADUATE (PhD) CONTRACTS
WITH THE SOLAIRE RESEARCH TRAINING NETWORK
In the framework of the SOLAIRE Marie Curie Research Training Network, ten contracts are available to carry out research at the postgraduate level leading to a PhD thesis. The research of each student will be jointly supervised by two of the network nodes, one of which will be in charge of the doctoral studies.
The Solaire network is a joint initiative of 12 European Universities and Research Institutes and a private R&D company:
Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (Network Coordinator)
University of St Andrews Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
Niels Bohr Institute, Univ of Copenhagen
Max Planck Institut für Sonnensystemforschung
Universitetet i Oslo Observatoire de Paris – Meudon
Ruhr Universität Bochum
University of Glasgow
Università di Catania
Utrecht University
Eötvös University
Budapest Fluid Gravity Engineering Ltd
The research of Solaire's PhD students will be done within the five collaborative research packages of the network:
(CP1) Magnetic Flux Emergence from the Solar Interior to the Corona;
(CP2) Magnetic Connectivity through the Atmospheric Layers and Field Extrapolation;
(CP3) Magnetic Reconnection;
(CP4) Solar Flares;
(CP5) Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Interplanetary Dynamics.
The research of the network is carried out using leading edge tools for supercomputing, groundbased and space observations and analytical theory.
Following the European Commission rules for these contracts, candidates can be citizens of any country in the world with less than 4 years of postgraduate research experience at the time of appointment. They cannot be appointed in their own country or in a country where they have spent more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Precise explanations to these rules can be found in the contact addresses given below.
The Solaire network especially encourages applications from women and from candidates from New Member States or Less Favoured Regions of the EU. For further information, please visit the Solaire web page: http://www.solairenetwork.eu

One or two Ph.D. student positions are available in the computational biophysics group at Boston College. Our department is ranked among the top 50 nationwide, and we currently enroll more than 120 graduate students.
The research in our group focuses on understanding the microscopic properties of condensed phase processes, with particular emphasis on biological systems. We study both fundamental aspects of biomolecules in general, such as the effects of solvation on the structure and dynamics of proteins in both aqueous and membrane environments, as well as specific biophysical processes, such as the workings of molecular motors, and the mechanism of charge transfer in photosynthetic reaction centers.
A recent focus of our work has been the conformational dynamics of the c-unit of ATP synthase, a complex enzyme which facilitates the
synthesis of cellular ATP by utilizing a transmembrane proton gradient to drive a rotary catalytic mechanism. A large part of our effort is
devoted to the development of advanced methods for biomolecular simulations, which will allow us to study larger systems and probe
longer timescales.
Other areas of interest include:
-The study of surfactant assisted solubilization of carbon nanotubes
-Investigation of the kinetics of the allosteric transition in certain
-enzymes which are important targets for diabetes therapy Study of
-ligand-induced conformational changes in a class of tumor suppressant
proteins
Additional information is available at: http://chemserv.bc.edu/~krilov
We are seeking highly motivated students, with research background in computational/ theoretical physics or chemistry and computational
skills. Experience in molecular dynamics simulations and programming is a plus. The positions are funded through teaching and research
assistantships and include full tuition remission as well as a competitive stipend.
To apply, please send a CV and the names of three references to Prof. Goran Krilov (krilov{at}bc.edu)
